Chapter Ten

"What the hell are you doing here?" I settled my hands on my hips and stared at the man blocking my way into the club. I couldn't believe he was here. What did he think he was doing? Was this some kind of way for the three of them to keep an eye on me? I was supposed to be staying away from them, and this was only going to make it harder.

He shrugged and grinned, his ginger hair falling into his eyes. "I work here."

"You do not." I shoved my way past The-Tom and into the club, making an immediate left into the dressing rooms. Corinne kept her office there. Said she liked keeping close to her girls. And he probably wouldn't follow me inside in case someone else was changing. This was going to become my favorite place in the club very quickly.

"Did you hire him?" I demanded the moment I was inside.

"Who, dear?" Corinne tapped on her laptop one finger at a time, using the end of her long fingernails.

"Tom." I almost sighed with relief after remembering to use his stupid fake-name. I hoped they came clean soon enough, or I was going to start messing up more and more.

"Oh, he's a bit of eye candy, isn't he? Yes, he had great references and asked for a salary lower than Buddy's. Of course, I offered him more, but there you are. He's going to work the door." She shrugged and turned back to her work.

One of the other bouncers had graduated college and moved away several weeks before. It would've been nice to have someone on the door again, but not Theo. I had no doubt he was capable of the job, especially if the physique he'd shown off during my dreams was real. But I didn't want him near me. It wouldn't help me in my attempt to stay out of their lives.

"Corinne, he's one of them. One of the three that thinks I'm a goddess." I hoped it would be enough to convince her to reconsider her plan.

She snorted and looked up at me. "You're joking."

I shook my head with an eyebrow arched.

"Well, he's here for now. Let's see how it goes. It might be good for you to get to know him better."

Of course. What was it about these men that made even me want to accept them readily into my life? Theo had done a great job on Corinne. And she didn't seem nearly as concerned about it as she should, especially when she'd just accepted him into a work position at her club.

My act was first tonight, but I only had one show. Fridays were always packed, so we ran a slightly longer show with more girls. I was also expected to spend more time on the floor, flirting and laughing with the patrons. My least favorite part of the job. If I could have gotten out of her, then I would, but Corinne expected it of everyone. Even she was out there schmoozing with everyone and making them drink more, tip more, and just have a good time.
